I have two up there that are rough sketches for an idea for some posts and are, as such, not marked as "Published" "Syndicated" "Aggregated" or "On the Front Page" and, as such, shouldn't be up at all. When you click on them from the front page they take you to a page saying the content does not exist or was removed. This is because you shouldn't be able to view it at all and commenting is turned off. I can only assume Aaron will fix this eventually, but until them, I'll just have to compose my rants offline and copy and paste them when I'm done...

Shahms E. Some of you may have noticed that the old content doesn't have any categories actually set and doesn't show up in the main syndication or aggregate site. Shit, shit, shit. There are a number of solutions, none of them pleasant. Had I had the foresight to save the output of the programs I used to restore the old content, everything would be simple. I did not do this, so nothing is simple. Here are the choices:

We could remove the old articles and readd them (a little tricky, I'm sure).

Re-add the articles and let you delete the duplicates (an ugly solution to be sure).

Let you fix the categories manually (as I have for my posts).

Do something magical that I haven't thought of yet.

Fixing the syndication and aggregation is simple, the only real problem is the categories... Let me know what you think...

Update: Sweet, sweet justice. I can fix the problems. It's a little "kludgy" but by querying all the current posts for a blog I can match (exactly) the title and use that information to correct the categories &c. Unfortunately, I can no longer get in to any account but mine to fix the problems. Still waiting to here from the Patterson. Once that happens, all should be resolved.

Update: Well, well, well, look who's back. All the posts should be properly syndicated and categorized. Of course, you can't login any more . . . but that's a small price to pay, right? Seriously, I imagine Aaron will change all of the passwords back once he returns from lunch.

Shahms E. What does this mean for you, worthy traveler?
It means that as soon as Aaron gets a hold of me, all of your old posts and comments will be there as well!

Let The Rejoicing Begin!

Oh, yeah. The restoration process will restore categories for all of the categories you used in your posts, but no others (for an individual blog). Just FYI

Update: A number of the articles that are currently on the front page were posted after my last backup. That means I don't have them and they may or may not get migrated. Seeing as how the important ones have to do with migrating to the new site and general klinkfamily woes, I'm not overly concerned. But, Rohit, if you want your most recent post, let me know and I'll grab it.

Update: I just put up a goodly number of the historical posts, there are still posts from Dennis, John, Stormy and Homoby along with ~6 "random others" that will probably go into an "others" blog if the people who own them don't set up blogs soon.

Shahms E. I don't know how much you all care about past comments, but I thought I'd answer the questions before they get asked.

When klinkfamily first stopped working, I got a bee in by bonnet over the loss of comments and as soon as they were up and running again, I wrote a small script that pulls the comments and all the associated information (name, email, aim, etc.) so that Aaron could maintain the historical comments post-klinkfamily. I'm assuming Aaron will have me send him the older comments when he gets the new system up and running.

Never Fear; Aaroncommand.com is on the case.

(EDIT by Aaron 1/21/04: yes, this includes the "lost comments" that disappeared a few months ago.)

Shahms E. Looks like aaroncommand.Text is coming along nicely. All that *really* remains is

getting people to set up accounts

migrating old articles to those accounts

putting the comments on the posts

I suppose it might be reasonable and workable to just create a "Classic" account and add the old articles and such to that and eventually move them to their new owners. Hell, I might be able to use my account for that.
